What is WiFi CSI sensing?

Channel State Information (CSI) is how a WiFi link measures the channel between transmitter and receiver: amplitude, phase, and delay across many OFDM subcarriers. A single RSSI reading collapses that into one number; CSI keeps the detail.

Walls, furniture, and bodies all reflect and absorb radio energy. When someone moves—or stays still enough that breathing shifts the field—the subcarrier pattern shifts in consistent ways. Sensing systems read those shifts to infer what changed in the environment.

Can WiFi sensing measure breathing or vital signs?

CSI phase can pick up the periodic chest motion of respiration (0.1–0.5 Hz) after preprocessing, but reliability depends on range, node placement, and a quiet environment. Wavey treats this as presence awareness, not clinical vitals.

Does WiFi sensing work through walls?

WiFi penetrates drywall and interior partitions, so CSI can detect motion in adjacent rooms without line of sight. Dense materials like concrete block most of the signal; expect zone-level motion detection, not precise through-wall mapping.
